Central Illinois Greyhound Adoption Application

Greyhounds are affectionate, friendly and intelligent dogs that thrive on attention and human companionship. Raised with their littermates, where they competed for affection, greyhounds love becoming the center of attention as household pets. Greyhounds do not usually make good watchdogs because of their friendly nature. Central Illinois Greyhound Adoption (CIGA) greyhounds are made with the understanding that the dog will become a house pet. Greyhounds, like people, have many personalities. The following questions help us match greyhounds with people and pets. You are welcome to expand on any area or provide additional information. This application, if approved, will become part of the Adoption Agreement.<br>

ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS

Adopting a greyhound is a lifetime commitment. The greyhound can be expected to live in excess of 12 years. To ensure the safety and health of the greyhound, the following Adoption Requirements must be complied with explicitly. Please do not consider adoption if you will not be able to meet this lifetime commitment or adhere to these requirements. Please also consider the financial responsibility in adopting a greyhound. This responsibility does not end with the Adoption Fee of $175. While greyhounds tend to be a fairly healthy breed, there are veterinary costs associated with caring for any dog.

1. Required Reading-Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan or Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood.
2. Additional Required Reading for those with young children-Child Proofing Your Dog by Brian Kilcommons
3. It is vital to keep your greyhound on leash whenever it is outdoors, unless it is in a fenced-in area. Retractable leashes are not allowed. NEVER trust your greyhound not to run away.
4. You must keep a collar bearing ID on your greyhound at all times.
5. If your greyhound should become lost, you are REQUIRED to notify CIGA immediately.
6. If you should ever decide you cannot keep or do not want your greyhound, you must return your dog to CIGA or Dubuque Greyhound Park & Casino. You may not give your greyhound to anyone other than a representative of CIGA or Dubuque Greyhound Park & Casino, and you must agree never to take it to a “pound” or any other humane shelter.
7. You must agree to keep your greyhound as a pet and never attempt to use it for pari-mutuel racing or laboratory research.
8. Your greyhound will be up to date on the following medical procedures for your greyhound: DHLPP, Rabies, spay or neuter, heartworm test, teeth cleaning, nail clip, and worming. Your responsibilities will include maintaining
regular vaccinations, veterinary care, and heartworm preventative whenever
they are required. Your greyhound’s racing career is over and can never be reactivated.
9. CIGA is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization that is entirely staffed by volunteers and funded primarily by donations. The adoption fee of $175.00 covers the cost of medical procedures, a muzzle, and a martingale collar with a matching leash. The adoption donation is non-refundable.
10. Adoptions of CIGA greyhounds are made with the understanding that each dog will be a house pet.

I/We have read and agree to abide by the Adoption Requirements. If I/we qualify and receive a greyhound from CIGA, I/we will accept full responsibility for the greyhound. I/We understand that my submission of this application neither guarantees nor implies that Central Illinois Greyhound Adoption will offer me a greyhound.

I/We also understand that to complete the processing of this application, a representative of the adoption program will schedule a visit to our home to assist us in matching the needs of a greyhound with the needs of our household. By submitting this application, I/we agree to such a scheduled visit and confirm that all members of the household will attend the home visit. I/We certify that all information provided on this application is true and correct. I/We understand that I/we may be asked to sign a printed copy of this application before receiving a greyhound.

This application will not be accepted unless it is completely filled out. Thank you for considering the adoption of a member of this amazing breed—the greyhound.
